Sewing Experience:
My sewing experience goes far back to when I was about 7, wow that means I have 33 years of experience!  Well, sewing is something that I was surrounded with all of my life.  One grandmother worked with the heavy fabrics for Home Decorating and Upholstry.  Those machines were very large an bulky and kinda scary looking when you are 7.  The needles were very thick and the thread going through the needle was so thick that l saw the twisted lines -just like a twisted rope - on it.  The fabric was just as thick, the leather's, suede's and heavy fabrics that will sustain years of wear and tear.  This type of fabric required very large heavy duty scissors (scary too) and all of the notions used were very large.  IMishelle & Joelle knew the difference between Upholstry fabric and Clothing fabric.  How did I know...well my other grandmother worked with the lighter fabrics used for clothing.  She would make adjustments to clothing, sew garments, wedding dresses and just about anything.  She would make her own patterns she would work with patterns (well kinda) she would just briefly look at them and just "know" what to do and off she would go.  Her machines were very small, compared to the industrial machine.  The notions were smaller and not so scary looking...but  beware of the pins!  The pins were so small that they would get lost in the carpet from time to time...lots of times.. and ouch!  You get to know the feeling of a shockwave going though your body at a very young age!  Sooo I learned to always look down and around when going into her sewing room.

My mom also had a sewing room at home and she showed me all of the basics of sewing.  I was destined to learn and it was easy.  I was supplied with many scraps from my mom.  I would think about things I can make with those scraps and start to create something.  I would be so happy when I found a LARGE scrap... those were hard to come by, of course.  Large scraps became great creations.  I was a very good pinner (is there such a word?), so I would be pinning, pinning, and pinning my scraps together in preparation to sew.  I must have pinned every 2 cm's!  Finally, I would be ready to sew...slowly, of course..the machines back then would not be able to go over pins and with the amount of pins I had in my creation, I might as well stitched it by hand!  My first project (successful project) would be ..Voila!.... a toothbrush holder!  It seemed to take F-O-R-E-V-E-R (and it probably did) to complete, but I was proud of myself.  Now that I look back at the logistics of it all, it is funny.  Two Rectangles, turned inside out with an opening at one end!

I went on to sew many things over the years, such as, baby clothes, clothes for me, quilting and lots of home decor (what a surprise).  I am so happy to have had so much experience with sewing, it really helps me in my day to day business of running Jojo's (yes that is me) a.k.a. Joelle.

Sewing is not my only craft, of course, I love to Scrapbook (when I have time and a large empty table to work on for a long period of time--like days).  Nothing worse than taking everything out, organizing it, getting the creative flow going and having to put it away, lol!  I also like to make jewelry, re-finish and paint furniture that I find on ventures, gardening and pretty much anything that allows me to create.

Well, I hope you enjoyed reading a bit about me, I enjoyed sharing  :)    E-mail me anytime, I would love to hear from you.  ~ Joelle

Our Story:

We understand how important it is to save money where we can when it comes to quilting fabric.  We discount our fabric right when it comes through our door.   We have been on both sides of Quilting and Sewing, we have been consumers, and now an online quilt fabric store.  Our experience as a consumer has been the catalyst to creating Jojo’s Quilt and Gift Shoppe.  We know that it can be a challenge to find good quality fabric at a reasonable price on the internet or even at your local quilt store.   The online auctions always ended up at a higher price when the auction ended.  The last straw was when a specific backing fabric was needed for the finishing of a quilt called “Roman Holiday by 3 Sisters for Moda Fabrics”.  Of course it was two years later and it was very difficult to find the backing print that would work perfectly.  After a long search on the internet, the backing was found!   In Australia!  Wow, the price and the shipping total was much more than here in the U.S., of course.  There was no way around it, every store I inquired at locally and online told me I wouldn’t be able to find more yardage because it was an old print.  The purchase was completed but the frustration lingered.

Jojo’s Quilt and Gift Shoppe opened online shortly thereafter and the primary focus was having low prices on a continuous basis.  The secondary focus is being a locator of quilt fabrics that are over a year old by Moda Fabrics or any other quilt fabric manufacturer.  We would love to help you find the specific fabric or a variation of the line to complete your project.  Surprisingly enough when we looked up “Roman Holiday” with Moda, we found 10 different prints available.  So our answer to that was, “Let’s take the extra step of helping others to find that special piece of fabric they need to complete the backing of that Quilt”.  The backing fabric is just as important as the top!
